Cleburne State Park

Unit 4, Lesson 5, part 5- "Find the nearest local, state, or national park that has a walking or hiking trail...once there look at a map of the park. Find a trail to go on with your parents..."

This was music to Samuel's ears! He woke up at 5 am today - Sunday- wondering if it was time to go. We left the house at 6:40 am, drove by Whataburger for a few breakfast burritos and orange juice, and headed to the park. The weather was perfect and the trail he chose was short.

We also have now confirmed that Samuel is a "ride in the car" type of explorer! All those spiders and spider webs were not fun to walk into!!

Applesauce Bread

Part of the lesson plan unit on Daniel Boone included cooking. It turned out to be an awesome recipe and a favorite one for Samuel to follow. There are so many skills that are learned in the process of cooking and I was happy that last week Samuel asked to make Applesauce Bread all over again. He was able to do ti absolutely by himself except for pouring the batter in the pans and putting them in the oven.

For Samuel the best part was licking the bowl. The rest of the family really enjoyed this sweet bread!

Official First Day of Third Grade

Samuel has been doing 3rd grade work for a few months now, but today we make it official.

Our curriculum has changed since Samuel has such a love for geography. It seemed wise to channel that energy towards school work instead of fighting against it all day long.

Paths of Exploration is a comprehensive curriculum to which we only have to add math and Bible. We are still using Singapore math and for Bible we've just started God's Great Covenant.



This has already proven to be a hectic year, yet it has also been a blessed one!

What does a chick need to be able to grow inside an egg?

That was the question for science exploration.

So we cracked an egg open and found:

"yolk" - food for the chick
"egg white" or "albumen" - water and nutrients
"white rope-like part" - "chalazas" - holds the egg in place

and we looked in the egg shell... do you see the bubble of air?

Is an experiment ever complete without touching?

George's Washington's Early Years

We have come to the end of Unit #12...
In Geography Samuel learned about tropical, temperate and polar zones...
In History he read about John Stark and George Washington.

Poetry was a delight with another poem by Robert Louis Stevenson "Marching Song"...
Bible Study was about self-control and he memorized Proverbs 21:23.

Our Hymn of the Month was "Pass Me Not"...(which reminds me of my maternal grandma, "Nana", she would of loved this video. Incidentally, this is not from the corresponding music of our curriculum.
In Language Arts he continues do learn cursive, learned about pronouns and his dictation skills are excellent.

He also began to read "The Treasure of Pelican Cove" by Milly Howard and finished "Justin Morgan had a Horse" .

Math? Multiplication and division have been very easy with our choice of Singapore Math. Science has been total fun reading about Jean Audubon.
